Press Release: Last Stage of Oskarshamn 2 Modernization To Be Postponed

2010-07-02
OKG has today decided to postpone the last stage of the modernization of Oskarshamn 2 (O2). According to the original time schedule, the last phase, with among others a power uprate to 840 MW, should have been implemented during the yearly outage 2011. The reason for the postponement is that the mission has appeared to be more comprehensive and complex than earlier assessed.

Since the year 2004 OKG is conducting a large project aiming at modernizing O2 within the four main areas safety, availability, power and environment. Many activities have already been performed during the yearly outages 2007 and 2009, when among others safety enhancing measures on the reactor pressure vessel have been carried out and the low pressure turbines have been exchanged.

The decision to postpone the last and finalizing phase is based on the fact that all necessary preparations still are not completed and the experiences from earlier large projects at OKG have shown that being well prepared is one of the most important success factors. The largest contributing reason to the delay is the complex design work. After having listened to earlier criticism from politicians, industry and consumers, OKG is not willing to risk, again, having delays in an outage, extending into the cold winter months.

The new period of implementation for the final phase is not yet decided on. Due to the postponement the yearly outage for 2011 at O2 will be shortened.
