Press Release: Plugged Sulphoric Acid Leak at OKG Water Plant

2010-05-27
During Thursday afternoon the Rescue Services plugged a minor hole in a pipe of a tank with sulphoric acid in a water plant of OKG. The sulphoric acid was collected in the container situated under the tank for this purpose and neither personnel nor the environment suffered any damages. An investigation has been initiated which will clarify why the leak could happen.

Around 2 o’clock p.m. on Thursday the responsible personnel at the OKG water plant established that a leak had arisen in a pipe of a tank with sulphoric acid. The Rescue Services were alerted immediately in order to neutralize the acid with calcium oxide and also to apply a temporary sealing on the hole which had caused the leak. Before this achievement approximately 75 liters of sulphoric acid had been collected in the purpose built container under the tank.

The electricity production of the company was not affected at all and there was no risk of damage to personnel or environment since the leak was restricted to the room in question. As soon as this room has been cleaned up the pipe will be examined in order to find the cause of the leak. Following repair the water plant will resume activities to its normal extent.
