OKG 2016 – Record and Reduction

Pressrelease Monday, January 09, 2017

2016 was a year of extremes for OKG. Unit Oskarshamn 3 broke a new production record and for the first time in one and the same calendar year, more than 10 billion kilowatt hours of electricity were delivered to the public. At the same time, adaptation was initiated concerning an organisation involving two out of three reactors being decommissioned. The reduced activities entailed that 500 jobs were cut this past year.

During 2016, OKG delivered totally 13.6 TWh (billion kilowatt hours) climate efficient electricity to customers in the Nordic market. This is 1.6 TWh more than delivered in 2015. With a delivery of nearly 10.3 TWh in 2016, unit Oskarshamn 3 (O3) thus beat the production record from the previous year. At the same time, unit Oskarshamn 1 (O1) had with a delivery of just below 3.4 TWh its third best production year in its 43 year old history.

However, for commercial reasons, unit Oskarshamn 1 will be shut down in the summer of 2017, in order to gradually be decommissioned together with the already shut down unit Oskarshamn 2 (O2). The decommissioning of these two production units entails a marked reduction of the total activities, which is reflected in the need of resources.

In 2016, the number of jobs in the activities was reduced by 500, most of which concerning contracted resources. During this past autumn, the company also gave notice of a reduction of employees by a further 280 individuals during the coming three years. By 2019, it is estimated that the activities will at the most require staffing of circa 600 own employees.

Irrespective of the extent of the activities, one significant condition for good competitiveness is that the organisation continues to focus on continuous improvement. As proof that this gives results, the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority, SSM, reversed the three year old decision on special supervision of OKG, this past summer.
