Application for Environmental Court Ruling on the Shutdown of unit Oskarshamn 1 has been Submitted

Pressrelease Thursday, June 18, 2015

The time of the shutdown of Oskarshamn 1 (O1) has not yet been established. By OKG submitting an application for an environmental court ruling, an important milestone in the preparations for a shutdown has now been passed.

Since about a year back, preparations are in progress for a future shutdown of unit Oskarshamn 1 (O1). The time for the shutdown has not been established, but the purpose of the initiated preparations is to make it possible to carry out a shutdown in an organised and planned manner, once the decision is made.

Within the scope of the preparations, an extensive environmental consequence description has been produced. This is intended as a basis for the environmental court ruling required in order to eventually perform a shutdown. At present, the material required is submitted to the Land and Environment Court in Växjö in order for the processing to be initiated. This is intended to lead to that an environmental court ruling is established some time around the turn of the year 2016 – 2017.

– That is not to say that a shutdown is planned to take place in connection to such a decision, says the MD, Johan Svenningsson. An environmental court ruling is, however, required in order to perform a shutdown, but such a decision is exclusively based on commercial grounds.

Unit O1 is a unique facility and a good example of highly developed Swedish engineering. However, after nearly fifty years of operation, the assessment is that the facility is gradually losing its competitiveness in relation to other kinds of production capacity. By the current market forecasts, it has simply been concluded that it gradually will be harder for the unit to bear the own costs for the future maintenance needs.

At unit O1, testing is at present being performed after this year's outage and the unit has thus varying output figures. The safety modernisation in progress at unit Oskarshamn 2 (O2) is at the same time in an intense phase involving commissioning of a number of systems and components, and the unit is scheduled for restart on 20 December. Unit Oskarshamn 3 (O3) is currently in the start-up stage after the annual outage.
