Landmark in OKG improvement work

Pressrelease Tuesday, June 28, 2016

By revoking its decision on special supervision, the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM) demonstrates that the work on continual improvement by the OKG organisation has had good results. The overall assessment by SSM of activities in the past year indicates that the organisation has corrected flaws that the authority had pointed out previously.

A little more than three years ago, SSM decided to stipulate special conditions for the operation of OKG. This meant both increased supervision and increased requirements on reports of ongoing activities as well as improvement measures. The decision was motivated mainly by a number of operational malfunctions in short succession at Oskarshamn 1 in 2011, but SSM made it clear that it was based on several different indications of flaws in how activities were managed.

The good production results of the past operating seasons may be considered one of several factors showing that the criticism from the authority has been taken into a account in a constructive manner. With regard to their assessment of how well OKG manages its activities today, SSM has thus decided to resume regular condition monitoring.

– We now know for sure that our ambitious work on making changes has had a positive effect, comments Johan Dasht, Managing Director. Despite the past year's major events including decisions to decommission two of our plants, our development journey continues tirelessly, in a period of hard challenges in the history of the company. The positive assessment of the authority does not only confirm that we are on the right path, but it is also a landmark for our struggle to reach a leading position in our industry. It gives us the energy to keep up the pace of the ongoing improvement work.

Both Oskarshamn 1 and Oskarshamn 3 are operating again following this year's successful maintenance outages.
